London City Airport wants to allow larger aircrafts to operate by 2027 so that the airport can move towards 9 million passengers a year. This means residents under flight paths could face more noise, more emissions and less respite. Leonie Cooper AM is campaigning against these plans until there is robust, independent assessment of their impact.

Why we’re campaigning

London City Airport is proposing changes to its flight paths that would allow larger aircraft, including the Airbus A320neo, to operate at the airport by 2027. The plans would lower aircraft approach paths and support the airport’s move towards its approved annual passenger cap of 9 million passengers.

Residents living near the airport and under affected flight paths could experience increased aircraft noise, more air pollution and greater disruption. The proposals would mean aircraft flying lower over some parts of London, including around City Hall.

The key issue is that these impacts have not yet been subject to the kind of robust, independent real-world assessment that residents deserve.

What we’re calling for

We want decisions about London City Airport’s future to be based on evidence and the interests of Londoners.

  • London City Airport’s proposals should not proceed until robust, detailed and independent assessments have been carried out
  • Any assessment must fully consider the impact on noise, air quality, emissions and residents’ quality of life
  • Protection for local people, including existing night-time curfews and weekend respite arrangements, should remain a priority

What we’ve done

As Deputy Chair of the London Assembly Environment Committee, Leonie Cooper AM opposed London City Airport’s proposals and supported a committee letter to the Mayor raising concerns about their impact. The letter was rejected by Conservative and Reform members on the committee and sent to the Mayor independently.

She has also asked the Mayor of London whether he will oppose the proposals until robust, detailed and independent assessments have been completed. He has said he supports continuing the weekend respite and limited hours.
